Why flowers fall early

Flowers lasting only half a day? Heat and watering might be the real issue.

Why flowers fall early

Flowers falling early can be disappointing but is often a stress response.

What's happening

Plants abort blooms they cannot sustain. A hibiscus that should last all day fades by noon, or champa petals drop overnight. Maintaining open flowers costs water and energy, and stressed plants let go early.

Why this happens

Heat stress is a top cause in India — terrace temperatures exceed 45°C during April–June. Irregular watering, low light, pest damage, and strong winds on high-rise balconies also shorten bloom life. Hard water common in many cities adds extra strain.

What usually helps

Water deeply in the early morning before heat builds. On terraces, use a 50% shade net during afternoon to reduce heat without blocking light. Mulch the soil with dried leaves or cocopeat to keep roots cool. Check for aphids and mealybugs that target tender blooms.

What to expect next

Bloom duration improves once conditions stabilize. Note when flowers lasted longest and replicate those conditions — each cycle gets better with consistent care.
