Why leaves lose their shine
Healthy leaves have a natural sheen that fades under stress. Here's what dulls them and how to bring it back.
What's happening
The waxy cuticle coating each leaf acts as a shield and gives it that glossy look. Dust, low humidity, or poor nutrition weakens this layer, making leaves look flat and dull.
Why this happens
In Indian cities, construction dust, vehicle exhaust, and hard water deposits coat leaves quickly. Peak summer dryness and AC further strip moisture from leaf surfaces. Magnesium and iron deficiencies — common in basic garden soil — also affect leaf quality.
What usually helps
Wipe broad leaves fortnightly with a soft cloth dampened in filtered water. For bushy plants, a gentle room-temperature shower works. Feed monthly with balanced liquid fertiliser during the growing season. Skip oil-based shine sprays — they trap more dust.
What to expect next
Old leaves may not fully recover, but new growth should come in glossy within two to three weeks of consistent care.
