Why woody plants focus on roots first
Root development is a priority for trees and woody plants, especially after repotting or bringing a new plant home.
What's happening
The plant directs most energy downward into expanding roots. Above-ground growth slows—no new leaves for weeks or months. This is normal. Gently tug the plant; resistance means roots are doing their job.
Why this happens
Strong roots are the foundation for water uptake, nutrients, and structural stability. Woody plants can't sustain top-heavy growth without matching roots. In containers, the plant must colonise available soil before investing in leaves.
What usually helps
Don't repot again or disturb soil during this phase. Water deeply but infrequently—let the top inch dry so roots grow deeper. Use a well-draining blend of garden soil, compost, and perlite. Hold off fertilising for 4–6 weeks after repotting.
What to expect next
Once roots fill the pot, a leaf flush appears. This takes 3–8 weeks in Indian conditions. Plants repotted before monsoon (May–June) establish fastest thanks to warm soil and rising humidity.
