Succulents need less frequent watering than most indoor plants.
What's happening
Watering frequency depends on light, temperature, soil, and pot material. A succulent on a sunny Bangalore balcony in April may need water every five to seven days, while the same plant in a dim Mumbai flat during monsoon can go three weeks. Read your conditions rather than following a fixed schedule.
Why this happens
Succulents store water in thick leaves and stems. Their roots absorb quickly and then need to stay dry. When soil stays wet too long, roots break down — overwatering kills more succulents than drought.
What usually helps
Water only when soil is dry all the way through, not just the surface. Stick a toothpick in; if it comes out clean, water deeply and let excess drain. Use cocopeat, perlite, and sand. Terracotta dries faster than plastic — a real advantage during monsoon.
What to expect next
You will develop a sense of your plant's rhythm over time. Wrinkled or soft leaves are a reliable thirst signal. Most succulents in Indian homes settle into once every seven to fourteen days depending on the season.
