Why leaf tips dry first

Dry leaf tips are an early sign of moisture imbalance and one of the most common complaints from Indian indoor and balcony growers.

What's happening

Tips receive water last through the plant's vascular system. When moisture falls short, tips brown and crisp while the rest stays green. The browning is permanent on affected leaves but not harmful to the overall plant.

Why this happens

Low humidity is the primary cause. Indian summers are dry in northern and central cities. AC rooms drop humidity to 20-30%, which is desert-level dryness for tropical plants. Inconsistent watering and salt buildup from tap water or excess fertilizer worsen the problem.

What usually helps

Group plants together or place pots on wet pebble trays for gentle humidity. Water consistently before soil goes bone dry — when the top 2-3 cm feels dry. Flush soil monthly to clear salt deposits. Filtered or overnight-rested water reduces mineral buildup.

What to expect next

Trim brown tips with clean scissors. New leaves should grow with healthy tips once humidity and watering consistency improve.
