What spots on leaves usually signal
Spots look alarming, but they're useful diagnostic clues. Colour, shape, and pattern narrow down the cause quickly.
What's happening
Localised tissue damage shows as brown, black, yellow, or white patches. Brown crispy spots often mean sunburn. Soft dark spots suggest fungal infection. Yellow patches with green veins point to nutrient deficiency.
Why this happens
Harsh afternoon sun on west-facing balconies is a common Indian culprit. During monsoon, humidity above 80% fuels fungal leaf spots. Hard water deposits leave white mineral marks. Splashing water on leaves in direct sun causes burn spots too.
What usually helps
Read the pattern: random spots suggest sun or physical damage; spreading from edges inward suggests salt burn; circular spots with halos indicate fungal issues. For fungi, remove affected leaves, improve airflow, and spray neem oil (5ml per litre) every ten days during monsoon.
What to expect next
Existing spots won't heal, but preventing new ones is what counts. Once you address the cause, new growth should emerge spot-free.
