What yellowing leaves usually mean

Yellowing leaves are one of the most visible signs of stress, but they have many causes. The key is noticing which leaves turn yellow and how.

What's happening

Chlorophyll breaks down faster than it is produced. Yellowing may appear across entire leaves, in patches, or between veins while veins stay green — each pattern hints at a different cause.

Why this happens

Overwatering is the most common cause in Indian homes — soggy roots cannot deliver nutrients. Low monsoon light slows photosynthesis. Nitrogen deficiency yellows older leaves first; iron deficiency shows in newer leaves with green veins. A couple of yellow lower leaves on a healthy plant is just natural aging.

What usually helps

Check watering first — if soil stays wet, let it dry. Move the plant to brighter light. For nutrients, use balanced fertilizer (20:20:20) at half strength monthly during March-October. Skip in winter. If only old leaves yellow while new growth looks healthy, no action is needed.

What to expect next

Yellow leaves will not green again, but fixing the cause prevents further yellowing. Healthy new growth appears in two to three weeks.
