What underwatered soil looks like
Dry soil is not always easy to spot, especially when only the surface is checked. Many Indian growers water lightly every day, wetting the top layer but leaving deeper roots bone dry.
What's happening
Soil dries unevenly. When fully dry, it shrinks and pulls away from pot edges, creating gaps where water runs down the sides without soaking the root zone. If water drains out in seconds, it is likely not being absorbed at all.
Why this happens
Compacted soil, root-bound pots, or shallow watering prevent moisture from reaching all roots. Cocopeat mixes become hydrophobic when completely dry — water beads on the surface instead of soaking in.
What usually helps
Water slowly until excess drains from the bottom. If soil has pulled away from the pot, soak the entire pot in a tray of water for 15-20 minutes to rehydrate from below. For balcony plants in summer, water before 8 AM so roots absorb moisture before peak heat.
What to expect next
Leaves often regain firmness within a few hours to a couple of days. Severely dried plants may drop older leaves, but new growth returns healthy.
