Humidity plays a major role in the health of tropical foliage plants.
What's happening
Leaves lose moisture slowly in humid air, staying firm and vibrant. Coastal cities like Mumbai and Chennai stay above 60% humidity most of the year, which tropicals love. But in Delhi or Jaipur, winter humidity drops below 30%, and AC rooms anywhere in India feel desert-dry for plants.
Why this happens
Tropical plants evolved in 60–80% humidity. Their large, thin leaves release moisture fast. When air is too dry, leaves lose water faster than roots can replace it, causing crispy edges, brown tips, and curling.
What usually helps
Group plants together — combined transpiration raises local moisture. Place pots on a tray of wet pebbles to boost humidity without waterlogging. Wipe leaves with a damp cloth in dry months to remove dust and briefly add moisture. Keep plants away from direct AC vent paths.
What to expect next
New leaves come in larger and smoother when humidity stays above 50%. During monsoon your plants may look their best — take notes on what worked so you can replicate it.
