How humidity changes water needs

Humidity affects how quickly plants lose moisture through their leaves. In India, humidity swings from 20% in a Delhi winter to 95% during Mumbai monsoon — and plants feel every shift.

What's happening

Dry air pulls moisture from leaves faster than roots can replace it. Humid air slows this, so plants retain moisture longer. During summer, hot dry winds on a west-facing balcony can dehydrate a plant in hours. In monsoon, soil stays wet for days.

Why this happens

Leaf pores respond to surrounding moisture. In dry air they close to conserve water, slowing growth. AC rooms create a unique problem — cool but extremely dry air that mimics desert conditions for tropical houseplants.

What usually helps

In dry weather, group pots together or place them on a tray of wet pebbles. During monsoon, reduce watering and improve air circulation with a fan. For AC rooms, move ferns and calatheas away from direct airflow and mist every other day.

What to expect next

Adjusting watering to match humidity leads to fewer crispy edges in summer and less yellowing during monsoon. Plants respond within days.
